What is a weft, exactly?
It helps to separate two things that sound the same.
A hair extension weft is the strip itself. Take a section of hair, lay it flat so every strand runs the same direction, and bind it along the top edge. That bound edge is the weft top, and it is what gets attached to your head. Everything below it hangs free as normal hair.
Weft extensions are the semi-permanent extension type made from those strips. They are fitted by a stylist, sit flat against your head, and stay in for weeks before being moved up.
The point of a weft is efficiency. Instead of attaching hundreds of individual strands, your stylist attaches one piece that carries hundreds of strands at once. It is why a full head of weft extensions holds more hair per install than any strand-by-strand method.
Two things about the weft top decide how good the result is. Thickness, because a bulky top creates a visible ridge under fine hair. And security, because a poorly bound top releases strands progressively, which is what people usually mean when they say their extensions are shedding.

Genius Wefts vs Traditional Wefts vs Hand-tied Wefts
Three construction methods, and the differences are real rather than marketing.

Traditional Wefts are machine-tied, sewn by machine along the top edge. They are the strongest and thickest, they hold the most hair per row, and they will not unravel if cut. That last point matters, because you can trim a machine-tied weft to width without it falling apart. The trade-off is a slightly thicker top.
Hand-tied wefts are knotted by hand and cannot be cut, since trimming unravels them. Bombay Hair no longer carries them. Genius Wefts give you the same flat, low-profile top and can be sized to your head, which hand-tied wefts never could.

How weft extensions attach to your head
Weft extensions are semi-permanent and fitted by a stylist. Two application methods are standard.
Beaded rows. Your stylist creates a row of small beads clamped onto sections of your own hair, then sews the weft onto that row. No adhesive and no heat, and the beads are repositioned as your hair grows.
Traditional sew-in. Your stylist braids a row across your head and sews the weft directly onto the braid. This is the original method, and it holds the most hair per install.
Both sit very flat, both distribute weight across a row rather than at single points, and both are moved up every few weeks as your hair grows out. Which one your stylist recommends usually depends on your hair density and how much length you are adding.
Wefts also appear in two other extension types, though these are not weft extensions in the collection sense.
Tape-ins. The weft is sandwiched between adhesive strips against a thin section of your own hair. Also semi-permanent, but bonded with tape rather than sewn.
Clip-ins. Small silicone-lined clips are sewn onto the weft top. You snap them in yourself and take them out at night, so nothing is bonded to your hair and no appointment is needed.

Which weft type suits your hair?
Density and thickness of your own hair matter more than length here.
Fine or thin hair needs the flattest possible weft top, because there is less of your own hair to hide it. Genius Wefts are the usual answer, since the finished top sits flatter than a machine-tied one. If you would rather not commit to a salon fitting, seamless clip-ins apply the same principle with a thin flexible band instead of a stitched top.
Medium hair works with either type. Traditional Wefts sit comfortably and give you the most hair per row.
Thick hair can carry heavier, wider wefts and generally needs more of them, since you are adding to an already dense head of hair rather than filling gaps.
Weight matters as much as construction. A weft that is too heavy for your own hair will not blend and can pull, regardless of how well it is made.
What separates a good weft from a bad one
Three things, and only one is visible in photographs.
The hair. 100% Remy human hair with the cuticle intact and aligned in one direction lies flat and resists tangling. Non-Remy hair has cuticles running in mixed directions, which is why cheap wefts matt within weeks.
